Roger Federer third-seeded former top-ranked

Shanghai, China (AHN) - Apart from improving his bid in his first action since a semifinal exit in last month’s U.S. Open, tennis superstar Roger Federer is also trying to improve his language skills by learning Mandarin during his free time at the on-going Shanghai Masters.

The third-seeded former top-ranked Federer, 29, is using some of his free time to take a lesson in Mandarin, along with the inner circle of his team.

The 16-time Grand Slam winner is fluent in English, French, German and his native Swiss-German. Federer also knows some language from his mother’s native land in South Africa.

“I like languages in general, said the amazing Swiss, as reported by theage.com.au. “I thought a bit Mandarin, which I'll never speak anyway, would just be a fun hour for me to learn some."

According to Federer, the private instruction was fine for him, but not for the other members of his team.

Federer travelled to China without wife Mirka and his one-year-old twin daughters for the Shanghai Masters, his first tennis since succumbing to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the recent U.S. Open.

At the Shanghai Masters Thursday, Federer dismantled Italy’s Andreas Seppi in 6-3, 6-4 fashion to clinch a quarterfinal berth on the same day his arch-rival top-ranked Rafael Nadal was upset by the 13th-seeded Jurgen Melzer.

On Friday’s quarterfinals, Federer will face another formidable foe--French Open finalist Robin Soderling. Soderling, who has given Federer a tough time in their every encounter, beat the Swiss master in a quarterfinal match at this year’s French Open.
